FABRIC VALANCES : I hope this is clear. And curtain-making is certainly sewing in my neck of the woods. If either of you have any more questions do not hesitate to ask.Hope someone can help. We have a brand new house with blinds on all thewindows including sliding doors. I want to make fabric valances ofdifferent styles for these but can't find a book that makes sense. I'mhaving trouble with determining the proportions. Have you looked at the Singer books on decorating? I find them to be quite easy to understand. A couple of them are titled "Sewing for the Home" and "More Sewing for the Home" - or at least that is how I remember it.I have seen curtains recently that have an interlining of wadding or paddingbetween the actual curtain fabric and the lining, that makes them hangreally beautifully. Does anyone have any advice about how to make suchcurtains? Thanks, Deborah

FABRIC VALANCES : Hi all,I am a new mom and just getting around to ordering the bedding for mydaughter's bedroom. I don't know anything about sewing or decorating, butI really want to make her room beautiful. I found a print that I like, buthave a question about the window valence. The window is 72" wide. Thebaloon valance is for a window 60" wide. BUT, the measurement is 17" x84". Do I need to order two valances to fit the window? Will the onevalance look okay if I stretch it out instead of gathering it? Can I evendo that? Should I just order fabric and find someone to make a valance? The fabric measurement is 45" and I don't know how much I would need. Thefabric design is damask. If I put two valances how will I join the themso you can't see the that it is two different peices? Oh, I can alsoorder rosettes for the corners. I don't think they have a long bow oranything They are made of voile which I could order more or to cover theseam. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!Karen P. and (sweer baby girl) Arinn

FABRIC VALANCES : Probably not. If the top measurement of the valance is 12" less than thewindow, then you've got a problem, which we'll address below. But if it's jsutgot a lot of fullness, then I think you should be able to floof it out so thatit looks right. As long as you're not _stretching_ the material, yes, it'll look fine.Gathering is your friend, though, because the fullness helps it look "right"even if it's not quite perfect.Um, no. I would say, order fabric and drape it around until you find somedrapey way of putting it on the wall that you like.I could figure it out for you if I knew how long (or tall, I guess you couldsay) the valance had to be.Cheaper to make them yourself from the leftover fabric scraps. My idea, like I say, is to either follow a simple pattern or just drape it around until you get the look you want. Any other questions or comments, feel free to post and we'll see what we can do...

FABRIC VALANCES : I am a bit confused. Are you ordering a premade valance? Or making ityourself using a pattern? I think the 12" difference will be OK, esp. ifthere is a lot of fullness in the valance. You can always do somethingcute at the corners like tuck a stuffed animal between the rod and thewall, or something to cover whatever little gap is left after your "floof"it (like that word, Tony!).If you are making it yourself, I have several books that give directionsfor making made to measure balloon valances. Perhaps I could send you acopy of the directions if you are very concerned that your valance asdescribed will be too narrow.Thanks. It's also seen in the form "big and floofy", like a billowy Indianskirt.Hmmm...mail keeps coming back to me :( You tell your ISP to bounce mymail? LOL! This is strange...it won't go thru....

FABRIC VALANCES : I've been thumbing through every book and magazine known to man looking for"the fabric" that I have in my mind for my valances. My decorator has given meseveral choices but none of them have been quite right. Finally today, I foundit! It's in British Home and Garden, pg 103, bottom right picture. The fabricthat is covering the sewing box--- that's my valances! My question: how do I possibly track it down. I am meeting with my decoratortomorrow and will start her looking for it. Is there anything I can do toassist the process- search engines to try, people to call, gods to pray to,mantras to chant....This really is the fabric that ties the other fabrics together. I desperatelywant to find it. Any help would be great appreciated. I'm in Memphis, TN bythe way.Well, this suggestion won't be anything that will yield quick results, but incase you end up having trouble finding it you might want to write to themagazine right now to ask about the fabric.Claire in SF
