TRAVERSE CURTAIN ROD : The room is approximately 14 feet wide by 23 feet long with theAV equipment at one end. The acoustics aren't bad at all, really. Imaging could be better, but room geometry doesn't giveme much to work with. The listening positions are about 12'back and the surround speakers will have to be near the ceilingand about 5' behind the listening positions. (Nothing I canreally do about this :-(. Not if I want to preserve my marriageWhenever I add/replace components, I usually try to go "one stepbetter" than what's in the rest of the system. But price *is*an object here--to a degree.Paradigm recommends the CC-350 center channel speaker and ADP-350surround speakers. You might want to try those out. Then you canupgrade your subwoofer with a Paradigm subwoofer. Paradigm makesvery good home theater subwoofers at very good prices.
TRAVERSE CURTAIN ROD : Thanks for the follow-up. I would've responded sooner, butgot all wrapped up in the speaker wire thread. (I imagineyou can guess how *that's* turned out.) Anyway...Do to space and placement limitations, it looks like I'll have tosettle for the AD-70 ("two notches down" from the ADP-350). I'mwondering if you're intimately familiar with the Paradigm line andcan tell me how adverse an effect on the quality of the soundfield that down-grade might have?I'm not intimately familiar with Paradigm speakers (except for theolder Reference Active/20.) I don't know how the AD-70 would fit with the Paradigm speakers you have right now, but I imagine that Paradigm has a "family sound" so that the AD-70 might do well as asurround speaker for your main speakers. It's worth auditioning inyour own system. TRAVERSE CURTAIN ROD : I have listened to the Paradigm CC-70, CC-170, and CC-350 centerchannel speakers (which are extremely similiar to the AD-series)and found that (using music as source material, turning downthe volume to all other speakers and only listening to the center channel alone) the 350 was much better. The CC-170was okay, but the CC-70 sounded compressed and non-musical IMHO.This was similiar to my findings when I compared the Micro,Atom, Titan, and Mini-Monitors (prices around $140, $180, $220,and $330/pr respectively). Here I didn't like the Micro atall - very boxy, but the Atom was exceptional for its price. The Titan was good, but voices were a bit heavier/chestierthan the Atom - albeit they had a fuller bass and so many wouldlike them better for the extra bass - I like the Atoms betteroverall due to the better midrange (IMHO). The Mini'sare quite good in their price range too. TRAVERSE CURTAIN ROD : Now if you are using the AD-70's as rear-channel surrounds, theymight be okay. They will still be limited in fidelity, but onmovies, rear-channels are usually used for a little ambience andsome sound effects. So you can live with a little less fidelityif you aren't overly demanding of your HT system.Personally I wouldn't recommend the AD-70s for use as frontchannels. The Atoms are much, much better and are still veryreasonably priced. As for the center channel, I strongly recommend going up to the 350 models. The list price is $130more than the 170 and that isn't too much to pay to make everyshow you watch on TV for the next several years more enjoyable. In article , (Dana Alan) writes:[Wherein I wonder about how much a performance "hit" I'll takeusing Paradigm AD-70's for surround instead of ADP-170's orADP-350's...] TRAVERSE CURTAIN ROD : Compromise is good... sometimes. In this case, it sounds tome like you're trying to say that down-grading to ADP-70'sis carrying it a bit too far.Oh, I'll be keeping my 5se's for that. I'm quite happy withthem. That's what I had intended on doing. But the positivereenforcement is good.I think I'll also see if I can't find a way to: persuade myselfthat I should go with the ADP-170's (for surround), figure outhow to put them where I need them, and then see if I can'tThe AD-70's are dual-sided Micros. They have the same tweeter and mid/bass driver as the Micro. Frankly, I'm not at all enamoredof the Micro, nor the CC-70, which has the same mid/bass driver (2 ofthem) but with the better 19mm tweeter - found in several higherpriced Paradigm speakers.
